Burundi has been facing a severe fuel crisis for several months, prompting authorities to implement digital solutions for better fuel management. To address fuel shortages and streamline distribution, the Burundi Petroleum Company (Sopebu) has introduced a digital registration system for vehicles purchasing fuel at gas stations.
The initiative, launched on September 30 and running until October 7, requires vehicle owners to register at designated sites in Bujumbura. This measure aims to ensure a fair distribution of fuel while preventing fraud and stock mismanagement.
Introducing the Igitoro Pass Mobile App
To enhance accessibility, Sopebu has developed a mobile application called "Igitoro Pass V 1.0." This app allows users to register remotely, reducing congestion at physical registration sites. The digital system covers various vehicles, including:
- Buses and minibuses
- Trucks and dump trucks
- Administrative and diplomatic vehicles
- Private cars and taxis
- Tuk-tuks and motorcycles
- Tractors and generators
By implementing fuel management technologies, Burundi aims to optimize fuel allocation and ensure fair distribution to all vehicle categories.
Fuel Rationing and Allocation System
The new system regulates fuel consumption by assigning specific quotas based on vehicle type. According to Sopebu, the planned fuel allocations are:
- Small cars: 80 liters per week (40 liters per visit)
- Larger vehicles: 120 liters per week (60 liters per visit)
This structured approach to fuel management ensures better monitoring and reduces hoarding, making fuel available to more users.
Enhancing Transparency and Efficiency
The shift to digital vehicle registration is a significant step toward modernizing Burundi’s fuel sector. This initiative aims to:
- Improve stock management and tracking
- Reduce fuel-related fraud and misallocation
- Enhance operational efficiency and transparency
- Ensure fair fuel distribution across different user groups
By leveraging technology, Sopebu hopes to create a more reliable and sustainable fuel management system that benefits all Burundians.
A Step Toward Digital Transformation
The adoption of digital solutions in fuel distribution highlights Burundi’s commitment to modernization. As the country continues to face fuel shortages and power outages, embracing digital tools will play a crucial role in improving resource management and economic stability.
